Emma Raducanu | Vodafone

Working with Vodafone, Fuse and Director Nathan Gallagher, we created this 120 camera, 10 Meter diameter Bullet Time rig.
Each shot was taken with a 4 second exposure with a second curtain flash to capture Emma frozen after the long exposure.

About this project

Vodafone have announced a new partnership with nineteen-year-old sensation Emma Raducanu as its grassroots tennis ambassador. Emma will work with the brand to inspire the next generation of players and help grow grassroots tennis in the UK.

Capture
As part of this, we worked with the incredible director Nathan Gallagher and Fuse to create a huge 120 camera rig, to capture Emma and a young upcoming star Katie.

Light Painting
The movies were all shot in-camera, with no CGI. Using a 4 second exposure and a rear curtain flash to freeze Emma. Nathan created an illuminated tennis racket, which showed the light trail path as it moved.

All filming shot on 35mm film
The director chose to use a 35mm ARRI camera, using traditional film negative to utilise the natural grain without the need of digital filters as part of the creative aesthetic.

Lighting
A huge Briese over head lighting rig was set up, with 13 sky panel lights on a purpose built hoisted rig system.

Custom Software
Our custom software system controlled all the cameras, allowing settings to be updated instantly, download all the images, creating the movie previews, all in under 30 seconds per shot.

Studio

We captured it all in Studio 2 of Black Island Studios London, the same studio we used for SkyBets.

Bullet Time Light Painting

The process we used captured the motion using Bullet Time Light Painting, with all the cameras set to long exposure of 4 seconds and a curtain flash to freeze the subject.

We used 120 DSLR cameras, fitted around a custom 10 meter diameter rig system.

Post Production Team

All Bullet Time sequences were post produced by our own in-house team of editors. All movies provided at 5.5K 12 Bit TIFF sequences, 5.5K ProRes and compressed preview movies.
